Davy, Stephenson and the Miners’ Lamp

Team Campus in the City have been keeping busy whilst the shop is closed by working on the University’s fantastic series of Public Lectures.

The first one of the year. given by Professor Sharon Ruston from the Department of English and Creative Writing, looks at the letters of the inventor, chemist and poet, Sir Humphry Davy; who, as we all know, invented the safety lamp for miners…

…Or did he? In this lecture, Sharon uses letters written by and to Davy to uncover a story of rival inventors and several versions of the safety lamp.
